Overview
Headcrabs are a Xenian species that began appearing in the Black Mesa Research Facility shortly after the resonance cascade.
Appearance
Headcrabs appear small in size, about the size of a basketball. They have a fleshy body, two short hind legs, two long claw-like appendages in the front, and a mouth on their underbelly. The Black Mesa Team will not be modeling their own headcrabs, but use the stock Half-life 2 models. This also includes the headcrabs on the zombies themselves.
Behaviour
Headcrabs are Omnivores. It is unknown what their primary food source is on Xen, but on Earth they tend to seek out any meat that is near them, from humans to crows.
Headcrabs will waddle on their four limbs for basic transportation. After locating a victim they will leap through the air in an attempt to reach their victims head. If the headcrab is successful in reaching their victim's head, they will latch on, rendering the victim unconscious and eventually robbing the victim of the capability of conscious thought, thus transforming them into a dangerous Zombie.

Trivia
- Early on, headcrabs where able to latch on to the player. The player would slowly take damage over time and would have to rapidly press the attack button to throw the headcrab off. After extensive play testing it was disabled. However it can be re-enabled via a console command ( sk_headcrab_can_latch_on_player ).
- The headcrab is one of three enemies - the others being the Barnacle and the leech- that is being ported directly to Black Mesa from Half-Life 2 with no changes.
- The Black Mesa headcrab will be killed from radioactive gunk, contrary to previous half-life games. If the radioactive pool it is not deep enough to drown them, the radiation damage will finish them off. [1]
