Overview
The MP5 is a fully-automatic Sub-Machine Gun (SMG) that comprises one part of Gordon Freeman's arsenal. The MP5 also has a M203 grenade launcher as an attachment. The weapon was originally brought to the Black Mesa Research Facility by the armed forces sent to the facility soon after the resonance cascade.
The MP5 is a fairly standard, yet useful piece of weaponry. The weapon holds 50 9mm rounds in a single magazine, the same type of round as the Glock 17. Primary ammunition (in the form of both Pistol and MP5 magazines) for the MP5 is commonplace, often found in crates, at guard posts, and on Security Guard and Marine corpses. The player can carry up to 250 rounds in reserve, which is shared with the Glock [1].
The MP5's secondary function is the M203 grenade launcher attachment. The powerful 40mm HE grenade detonates upon impact with a solid surface or enemy, due to the grenade centrifuge-based fuse. Because of the increased power of the grenades the player can only carry up to 5, compared to the maximum of 10 in the original half-life [2].
The MP5 is perhaps most efficient when used as a suppressing weapon, giving the player time to switch to a more powerful alternative to deal with the specific threat. Its secondary fire is very efficient in clearing out larger groups of enemies in situations where the player has very little time for maneuvering. The MP5's grenade can also be fired much further than the Frag Grenade, allowing the player to 'mortar' enemies from a reasonably safe distance.
Primary Function
Fully automatic fire. The MP5 can become quite inaccurate over a period of sustained fire, so it is advisable to fire the weapon in short, controlled bursts.
Secondary Function
Fires a single M406 HE grenade which will explode on impact.

Redesign History
The MP5 has gone through several design iterations and its current design does not represent the model/skin on the Media section. The outdated version of the MP5 was an MP5A5, evident by the burst-fire trigger group, EOTech red dot sight, a GP-30 model 40mm grenade launcher mounted to an under-barrel RIS rail, and an MP5K PDW-style folding stock. The early MP5 can be seen in action in the Official Trailer.
The MP5 current design can be seen on the video above, in the Media section. As the video demonstrates, the MP5 has been given a sleeker look, with the Red Dot sight removed. Also worthy of note is the different effects used on the muzzle flash. The current MP5 is an MP5A3- noted by lack of a burst-fire marking, as well as the standard SEF trigger grouping as opposed to the Navy trigger grouping- with an M203 40mm grenade launcher, and a large flash suppressor protruding past the M203. This MP5 design bares much resemblance to the MP5 used in the 1999 action film End of Days.
Like in Half-Life, the MP5 don't have reloading animations for the grenade laucher. The animations were developed, but they took too long and interfered with the gameplay. Speeding the animations up so that they didn't affect the way the MP5 worked made them look ridiculous, so they have been omitted completely [3]. Only a delay between the shots was kept to decrease the rate of fire [4].
The M4
Early in development, the Team intended to allow players to switch between the MP5 and M4 in-game via the use of a Console Command. This was to appease to both sets of Half-Life fans who would either want the vanilla MP5 or the High-Def Pack M4, released alongside the Gearbox-developed Blue Shift. However, though the weapon has been modeled and skinned, it is no longer being included in the modification [5].
