Overview

The Manta Ray is a flying creature found in the borderworld of Xen. It has a pointed head and a single tail, much like a terrestrial Manta Ray. It is first encountered in the chapter Surface Tension.

Manta Rays occur in two forms. A single headed single tailed version that casually floats across Xen, occasionally blasting the ground with an energy beam for no known reason. The second is parted at the head and tail, this variant appears much more intelligent, and acts as a dropship for Xenian Forces.

Behaviour

Manta Rays are a native flying creature of Xen. Within the invasion of the Black Mesa Research Facility, they frequently drop off Alien Grunts as reinforcements. They are capable of flying at speeds greater than Mach 1, as evidenced by the shock waves they cause. They also demonstrate an offensive attack consisting of an orange energy beam, or "Laser".

As stated on the Black Mesa Devs Twitter feed, Mantas possess a "Alien manta poop ejection chute: at Black Mesa, we spare no details."[1]. The real purpose of this "poop chute" or what it really means is unknown at the moment.
