Chapter Summary
After escaping from the waste facility in Residue Processing, Gordon Freeman finds that in a secret part of the facility that the Black Mesa Research Team had been capturing and researching alien specimens from Xen even before the Resonance Cascade. He rearms himself with weapons and starts another battle against the HECU unit in the facility. Here he encounters the first Alien Grunt, encased in a glass pod, which releases it when Gordon destroys the glass encasing a switch to open a door. Gordon finds a security guard that tells him that a scientist with sufficient clearance is needed to operate the retinal scanner that will lead them to the outside and to the Lambda lab.
Later on in the chapter, Gordon Freeman continues on and fights the aliens and the HECU to discover the Tau Cannon, an experimental weapon that uses depleted uranium in order to propel negatively-charged tau particles to injure and kill assailants. The Tau Cannon is first acquired by Gordon when a security guard misuses it, tragically killing himself along with a scientist trapped inside the room by a Tau Cannon overcharge. Gordon finds three scientists with retinal scanner access in a room, whom cannot escape because a fellow scientist killed himself by switching on a malfunctioning surgical unit, which also prevented access to the room that led outside.
Questionable Ethics is the eleventh chapter of Black Mesa.
Gameplay
Enemies encountered in the Questionable Ethics chapter are comprised mostly of HECU Marines, with the occasional Xenian alien. As the player is still re-arming himself after being captured in Apprehension, the first portion of the chapter will have the player finding himself low on ammo. Puzzles play a large role in Questionable Ethics, allowing the player to breathe in between combat.
