Chapter Summary
After escaping from the waste facility in Residue Processing, Gordon Freeman finds himself in a secret part of the facility, previously used by the Black Mesa Research Team to research alien specimens from Xen. Here, Gordon realizes that Black Mesa had been making trips to Xen even before the Resonance Cascade. He rearms himself and starts anew his battle with the occupying HECU Marines. Here he encounters the first Alien Grunt, encased in a glass pod, though the pod gives way under the Grunt's escape attempts as Gordon exits the room. Gordon finds a security guard, who tells him that a scientist with sufficient clearance is needed to operate the retinal scanner that will lead them outside and to the Lambda lab.
As the chapter progresses, Gordon Freeman battles through aliens and Marines, eventually discovering the highly experimental Tau Cannon. The Tau Cannon is acquired by Gordon when a security guard misuses it, killing himself along with a scientist while barricaded inside a test room.
Finally, Gordon finds three scientists with retinal scanner access hiding out in a room guarded by a malfunctioning surgical unit. Gordon must cross the room, evading the machine, until he reaches its control panel and switches it off, clearing the way for the scientists to open the main lab doors.
Questionable Ethics is the eleventh chapter of Black Mesa.
Gameplay
Questionable Ethics is inhabited by a large occupying military unit, fighting against excaping Xenian test subjects. As the player is still re-arming himself after being captured in Apprehension, the first portion of the chapter has the player low on ammo, forcing him to conserve, avoid combat when possible, and make use of traps to defeat enemies. Puzzles play a large role in Questionable Ethics, allowing the player to breathe between confrontations.
