Chapter Summary
After escaping from the trash compactor, Gordon enters the waste disposal facility where all of Black Mesa's waste is processed. Before returning to the surface, Gordon must navigate through this gauntlet of hazardous machines and deathtraps, as well as fight through hordes of Xen aliens, all without the aid of his previously robust arsenal.
Residue Processing is the tenth chapter of Black Mesa.
Gameplay
This chapter slowly reintroduces Gordon's weapons, and slows the pace of the game after being captured and thrown in the trash compactor. There is a noticeable platforming element in this chapter, manifest in conveyor belts, compactors, mixers, incinerators, and various other dangerous machines that the player must navigate in order to progress.
Redesign History
The early iteration of the map, made mostly by Abe Robertson, was deleted and rebuilt by Jean-Paul Jarreau with a totally different point of view.
According to Jean Paul, Abe had "a clean, lab-like approach to the heaviest and grittiest chapter in the entire game. He [had] small, warehouse like elements where once giant and epic industrial structures once stood. But most importantly, he [ignored] a large gameplay elements in both c2a4b and c2a4c, leaving it bland, boring, and rather confusing in some parts."
So, in the new design, Jean Paul opted for an intimidating feel, increasing the vertical space but keeping the same or half of the horizontal space from the original. Also, he increased the emphasis on exploration, "with loads of optional back tracking elements, hidden stashes, and a shit ton of extra little bits to look around and enjoy". [4]
