Resonance Cascade
From Black Mesa: Wiki

Overview
A fictional disaster, the Resonance Cascade occurs when the test sample is brought close enough to the Anti-Mass Spectrometer in the second chapter, Anomalous Materials. This event, in effect, starts the game proper and launches the player on a perilous adventure through the Black Mesa Research Facility.
Background
In the Gordon's journey to the test labs, several conversations are overheard. Fellow scientists mention concern over pushing the test equipment to extreme levels. During the test, a scientist in the control room reports that the capacitors are charged to “105 percent”. Another mentions the possibility of a “resonance cascade event” but dismisses the thought as unlikely. Of course, before Gordon Freeman arrives at the Anti-Mass Spectrometer, there would be no idea as to what this event looks like.
In theory, the unknown test sample (a crystalline object, presumed to be extracted from Xen) is energized by the over-powered Anti-Mass Spectrometer, ripping open the space-time continuum. This “rift” allows inter-dimensional alien incursions, where Xenian flora, fauna, and even parts of the Xen border-world itself are brought to Earth.
Plot Device
The Resonance Cascade is a critical plot element, driving the player on a path to stop the incursions and close the inter-dimensional rift before the situation worsens. Later in the timeline, scientists describe a special section of the Black Mesa Research Complex known as the Lambda Complex. The player is instructed to launch a rocket that carries a special satellite into orbit. The satellite is a key element in closing the rift and stopping the alien invasion.
Guilt Trips
Although Gordon Freeman (the player) was only following instructions, there is a pervasive feeling that the disaster is somehow his fault. This feeling varies by individual, however the game provides references through character dialogue that may evoke this feeling.
SECURITY GUARD: “I'd like to get my hands on the guy responsible for this mess...”
SCIENTIST: “Who is responsible for this mess?”
