Overview
The Black Mesa Research Facility has two systems of rail transport: The Black Mesa Transit System and the Materials Transport. Both have different purposes and their own variations of trams; thus they shouldn't be confused.
Black Mesa Transit System
Featured in the chapter Inbound, The Black Mesa Transit System is an extensive monorail network linking the many different sectors of the Facility. The network is divided in four colored lines linking the seven main sectors, as well as other areas, and sub-lines. Each line serves three or four areas [2].
The Transit System is the primary form of transportation used by Black Mesa employees to travel from their dormitories to their workplace, do their laundry, entertain themselves in recreation areas, or eat in food courts. Managed by the Black Mesa Transit Authority, it is provided for the security, comfort and convenience of the Black Mesa personnel, residents and visitors. [3]
Inbound Tram
- (Main article: Inbound Tram)
Main car of the Black Mesa Transit System. The Inbound Tram is an automated, electric monorail based train car that transports passengers to many sectors of the Facility. It is equipped with seats, windows, an electric door, and loudspeakers where a pre-recorded female voice explains its function and relays other relevant informations to the train's riders.
Materials Transport
A mostly industrial area, the Materials Transport consists of a network of dilapidated rail trams extending deep beneath the facility (Sector E). It also features several hangars, ordinance facilities, maintenance areas, and offices. Most sections of the Materials Transport features several trams, partially flooded areas, and prominent Xen wildlife. Some parts are still in use while others are in a dire state of disrepair. [4]
The Materials Transport is featured in the chapters Power Up and On A Rail, as well as the first map of Apprehension.
The main cars used are The Freight Tram and the Tug Tram. Worthy of note is that these trams are the only player-driveable vehicles in Black Mesa.
Freight Tram
The freight tram is a rail transport with a control console at the front and a wooden flatbed for carrying cargo. It has a variable speed control that can be accessed either through a vgui panel or through use of the +"use" key. The speed count on the tram panel is in increments of Source engine units (1/16th of a foot) per second [5].
Tug Tram
Older and wider version of the freight tram, it is still in active service despite its venerable age traveling around the facility hauling heavy cargo. Unlike the other trams, it still functions with a fuel engine. It is likely to use the same driving controls as the freight tram.
