Overview
The Vortigaunt, Vort, or Alien Slave is a Xenian lifeform which serves as the primary soldier of the Xenian army. It is a brown humanoid creature with mottled skin, three arms and 4 eyes. Vortigaunts are seen wearing "Slave Bracelets" in Half-Life; graphical evidence that they are being enslaved and controlled by the Nihilanth.
Behaviour
Vortigaunts tend to attack in groups and also cooperate against enemy forces with Alien Grunts. When they're alone, or aren't being supervised by Alien Grunts or Controllers, they tend to try and hide from the enemy, rather than attacking head-on. Their main attack is a bolt of green lightning with a medium-to-long range. This attack has an area-of-effect damage which can be fatal to any nearby character with low health. Vortigaunts also have a melee attack for close-quarters combat, which simply consists of clawing the victim.
Black Mesa's Vortigaunts will not use the new melee attacks featured in Half-Life 2 Episode 2 [1]. This decision is final.
Mechanics
The Black Mesa's Vortigaunts current stats [2]:
- Health: 80
- Attack Damage: 15 (lightning) / 25 (claw)
After using the lightning attack, the Vortigaunt will hide (instead of rushing to the player just like Half-Life's Vortigaunts).

Redesign History
The Black Mesa's Vortigaunt is the Episode 2 "slave model" found in the Orange Box SDK shared files [3], but with a few cosmetic changes: improved textures/materials and all-green slave bracelets [4].
Vortigaunts use Half-Life 2 non-english sounds and voices but won't speak with the player. [5]
